Softwood, Composite, Hardwood & Bamboo — What Actually Happens After Year One
Every decking material looks good in a showroom sample. This is what we've actually seen happen on real gardens after a few winters — including the parts the "low maintenance" marketing skips over.
Softwood — The Straightforward Option
Pressure-treated softwood is the honest budget choice, and it does what it says on the tin as long as you keep up with it. The confusion mostly comes from what "treated" actually protects against.
What treatment does and doesn't do
Tanalith E treatment is vacuum-pressure impregnated into the timber under BS 8417, which sets out "Use Classes" for how much protection different parts of a deck need — deck boards need Use Class 3 (exterior, above ground), while posts and joists need Use Class 4 regardless of whether they actually touch the soil. That protects against fungal decay and insect attack.
What it doesn't stop:
- UV breaking down the surface fibres — this causes greying and eventual splintering if the deck is never coated
- The timber swelling in the rain and shrinking as it dries — the repeated cycle that causes splitting and cupping over time
- Algae and mould on the surface, particularly in shaded, damp corners of a garden — this doesn't need the wood to rot, it just needs a damp, organic surface to grow on
A well-maintained softwood deck — annual cleaning, a water-repellent or stain coat reapplied roughly every one to two years — will comfortably run 15-25 years. A neglected one can show real surface failure within 5-10. The material isn't the problem; skipping the recoat is.
Composite — What "Maintenance Free" Doesn't Tell You

Composite decking is popular for a real reason — no oiling, no staining, no splinters. We're not against it, but we think the "maintenance-free, never fades" pitch leaves out three things that matter once it's actually down and lived with.
✔ Most composite decking today is "capped" — a thin protective polymer shell, often under a millimetre thick, bonded over a wood-fibre and plastic core. A scratch or gouge deep enough to go through that cap exposes the different-coloured core underneath, and it will not weather back to match. The wood-grain look is embossed or printed onto the cap — it isn't real timber figure, so there's no grain to sand back to the way you could with real wood. Deep damage usually just means living with the mark, or replacing the board.
Replacing a damaged board is more involved than people expect. Most composite systems are held down by hidden clips that engage a groove along each board's edge — which only release from a free end of a run, not the middle. The practical fix for a board mid-deck is to cut it in half, lever the pieces out, unscrew the exposed clips, then slide a new board in from the edge. It disturbs the boards either side, and a factory-fresh replacement rarely matches a deck that's had a few years of sun on it.
On the "never fades" claim: most composite boards do shift colour in the first few months after installation before settling — some fading is normal and expected, it just happens early. Manufacturer fade warranties are typically built around a colour-difference measurement with a threshold set high enough that ordinary sun-fading doesn't count as a claimable defect. That's a legitimate way to write a warranty; it's just not the same as "will never visibly change."
Two more honest points worth knowing: composite gets noticeably hotter underfoot than timber in direct summer sun, especially in darker colours, and it still needs regular cleaning — the surface can grow mould and algae in damp, shaded gardens exactly like any other hard surface, it just won't rot.
Hardwood — Ipe Is the Standout
- Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) — Janka hardness ~3,680lbf, EN350 Durability Class 1. The densest, hardest option here, with natural oils that resist rot and insects without any chemical treatment. Widely reported across the trade to last 40+ years — that figure comes from installers and suppliers rather than an independent lab study, but it's consistent enough to trust as a realistic expectation.
- Massaranduba — EN350 Class 1, very close to Ipe in durability at a lower cost.
- Cumaru — nearly as hard as Ipe (Janka ~3,540lbf), a slightly warmer tone.
- Yellow Balau — EN350 Class 1, softer than the above (Janka ~2,100lbf) but a genuinely durable, more affordable hardwood we use often.
Silvering is cosmetic, not structural
Left unoiled, hardwood decking turns from honey-brown to silver-grey within a year or two, as UV breaks down the lignin in the surface cells and rain washes it out. This is exactly the same mechanism that greys oak beams and garden furniture — it doesn't affect the wood's strength or lifespan at all. Oiling every 1-3 years keeps the original colour; skipping it only costs you the look, not the deck.
Sourcing matters. Tropical hardwood, especially from the Amazon, has a real and documented history of illegal logging where it isn't properly regulated. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification requires legal harvesting and full chain-of-custody traceability from forest to board. It's a genuine sourcing question worth asking any installer, not a box-ticking exercise — we only use timber we can trace back through a long-standing UK supplier.
Hardwood is genuinely hard on tools — expect pre-drilling before every screw and a premium carbide blade that still won't last as long as it would on softwood. It's a slower, more skilled install, and the labour cost reflects that.
MOSO Bamboo — The Premium Alternative Most People Haven't Heard Of
MOSO Bamboo X-treme is compressed, thermally modified bamboo — heat-treated at around 200°C in a process that removes the natural sugars that would otherwise feed fungi and insects, while densifying the material to roughly 1150kg/m³, denser than most tropical hardwoods including Ipe. It carries EN350 Durability Class 1, the highest rating available, and typically comes with a 25-year manufacturer warranty.
The sustainability case is genuinely stronger than tropical hardwood, not just a marketing angle: bamboo regrows to full height in 4-5 years rather than the 50+ years a hardwood tree takes, and the plant isn't killed when it's harvested — the same root system sends up new growth. Like hardwood, it will silver over time if left unoiled, purely cosmetic, same mechanism as any other exterior timber.
It sits at a premium price point, above standard hardwood, and UK supply is more limited than sandstone-decking-style softwood or composite. Which One's Right for Your Garden?
Budget and happy to commit to a coat every year or two: softwood does the job well. Want the look without the upkeep and can live with its real limitations: composite, with your eyes open. Want it built once and left alone for decades: hardwood, ideally Ipe or Massaranduba, properly sourced. Want the strongest sustainability case with hardwood-beating density: bamboo is worth a look.
